Meaning of the commentary

The commentary answers why grahas entering the body are not seen. The four comparisons (reflection, heat and cold, sunlight in a sunstone, the soul in the body) show that they, by the causes described, first disturb the body, enter, and reveal themselves by signs. 'Soul' here is the bearer of the body; others take it as the mind. An objection: beings enter the body, not the embodied; the answer is that 'embodied' means the body, by figure of speech.

The eight qualities are aṇimā, laghimā, mahimā, garimā, prāpti, prākāmya, īśitva and vaśitva; others give eight lordly powers: entry into minds, knowledge, action by will, sight, hearing, memory, beauty and invisibility at will. These qualities are constant, not occasional; singly or in twos, threes and fours, or all together; all together in the god-grahas, in parts in the asuras and others.
