Meaning of the commentary

After the common measures, the commentary introduces formulations specific to ear discharge. It says the five astringents will later be listed in this chapter as tinduka, abhaya, rodhra, samanga, and amalaka. Others identify the group as aragvadha, shirisha, jambu, sarja, and ashvakarna, but the tika and Panjika do not accept that interpretation. Karpasi is explained as wild cotton. Shaivala is identified as durva, though others read hatha; mahavriksha as sehunda; and prasava as tender shoots. Kulira is identified as karkatashringi and manduki as a variety of brahmi. The substances from shaivala through the shoots form the decoction, while those beginning with kulira form the paste. The phrase to be supplied at the end is that the oil is praised for filling the ear in ear discharge.
