Overview

Anal skin tags are small, soft folds of skin that develop around the anal opening. They are benign (non-cancerous) and are commonly left behind after the healing of conditions such as thrombosed external hemorrhoids or chronic fissure-in-ano. Some individuals may also develop them due to friction, aging or previous inflammation.

Although many skin tags are harmless and require no treatment, they may interfere with hygiene, cause irritation or itching, become swollen, or be a cosmetic concern for some patients.

At AYANA, treatment is individualized based on the size, symptoms and underlying cause. Before removing a skin tag, associated conditions such as fissures or hemorrhoids are carefully evaluated and treated to reduce the risk of recurrence.

Causes & Risk Factors

Anal skin tags commonly develop following stretching or healing of the perianal skin.

  • Previous thrombosed external hemorrhoid
  • Chronic fissure-in-ano
  • Recurrent inflammation around the anus
  • Pregnancy and childbirth
  • Chronic constipation
  • Repeated straining during bowel movements
  • Friction and irritation
  • Aging
  • Previous anorectal surgery

Symptoms

Many skin tags cause no symptoms. When symptomatic, patients may experience:

  • A soft swelling near the anal opening
  • Difficulty maintaining hygiene
  • Itching around the anus
  • Moisture retention
  • Local irritation
  • Discomfort while cleaning
  • Occasional swelling after bowel movements
  • Cosmetic concern

Pain is uncommon unless another condition, such as a fissure or thrombosis, is present.

When Should You See a Doctor?

Medical evaluation is recommended if you notice:

  • A new swelling around the anus
  • Difficulty cleaning after bowel movements
  • Persistent itching or irritation
  • Bleeding
  • Pain or rapid enlargement
  • Recurrent swelling

Not every anal lump is a skin tag. Conditions such as hemorrhoids, fissures, warts and other anorectal disorders should be excluded before treatment.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis is usually straightforward and includes:

  • Medical history
  • Clinical examination
  • Inspection of the anal region
  • Digital rectal examination when indicated
  • Proctoscopy if associated anorectal disease is suspected

The underlying cause is assessed before recommending treatment.

Treatment Options at AYANA

Treatment depends on symptoms rather than the mere presence of a skin tag.

Observation

Small, asymptomatic skin tags usually do not require treatment. Patients are advised regarding:

  • Local hygiene
  • Prevention of constipation
  • Regular follow-up if changes occur

Conservative Care

For patients with mild irritation:

  • Local hygiene advice
  • Dietary modification
  • Management of constipation
  • Treatment of associated anorectal conditions

Kshara Karma

Selected skin tags may be treated using Kshara Karma, a physician-controlled Ayurvedic para-surgical procedure that produces controlled chemical cauterisation of the redundant tissue while preserving surrounding healthy skin.

Surgical Excision

Larger or symptomatic skin tags may be removed by simple surgical excision under local anaesthesia as a day-care procedure.

If a chronic fissure or hemorrhoids are present, these conditions are addressed simultaneously whenever appropriate.

Post-procedure Care

  • Local wound care
  • Pain management
  • Dietary advice
  • Prevention of constipation
  • Follow-up until complete healing

Recovery & Aftercare

Recovery is generally quick following skin tag removal. Patients are advised regarding:

  • Proper anal hygiene
  • Sitz baths when indicated
  • Fibre-rich diet
  • Adequate hydration
  • Avoiding constipation
  • Scheduled follow-up

Most patients resume normal daily activities within a short period.

Prevention

Although not all skin tags can be prevented, the following measures may reduce the risk:

  • Early treatment of fissure-in-ano
  • Timely management of hemorrhoids
  • Preventing constipation
  • Avoiding prolonged straining
  • Good anal hygiene
  • Prompt treatment of recurrent inflammation

Frequently Asked Questions

Are anal skin tags dangerous?

No. They are benign skin folds and do not become cancerous. However, any new anal swelling should be evaluated to confirm the diagnosis.

Do all skin tags need to be removed?

No. Treatment is recommended only if they cause symptoms, interfere with hygiene or are cosmetically bothersome.

Will removal be painful?

Skin tag removal is usually performed under appropriate local anaesthesia. Mild discomfort during healing is expected and is generally well controlled.

Can skin tags come back?

Recurrence is uncommon after complete removal, but new tags may develop if underlying conditions such as fissures or hemorrhoids persist.

Can I return to work after treatment?

Most patients undergoing day-care removal can resume routine activities within a day or two, depending on the size and location of the skin tag.

Is removal only for cosmetic reasons?

No. While cosmetic concerns are one reason for treatment, removal may also improve hygiene, reduce irritation and relieve persistent discomfort.
